Frequently Asked Questions

How are instructors remunerated for their teaching and mentoring work?

Students use part of their grant funding to cover the costs of private lessons with three instructors, in three different fields. Each instructor will have his own hourly rate. In North America, these will usually be between $18 to $35, while in the United Kingdom the average rate is closer to £2o to £25/hour. Students and instructors should establish the hourly rate of instruction prior to the first session, as well as appropriate payment methods, which can include cash, cheque, bank transfer, etc.

Are there any other related fees that students are expected to pay in addition to the hourly rate?

Instructors may provide their students with supplies (textbooks, photocopies, gear or equipment), which may result in additional fees.

How many hours of instruction per week are required in each course?

At minimum, students are expected to attend at least one hour of instruction with their teacher for each course per week. As such, a student taking business math, physical education and piano lessons, would complete at least 3 hours of classes each week, in total. Course instructors may, however, schedule more than one hour per week.

How are course times scheduled?

Students are expected to provide their instructors with their full schedule of obligations, in order to allow for effective scheduling of class times. Based on information provided by the student, the instructor proceeds with scheduling class times and communicates these times to the student, providing at least 48 hours advance notice. Students are expected to show up on time at these scheduled times and may only cancel for a valid reason (health/medical or family emergency).

What happens if a student cancels with less than 24 hours notice, is more than 15 minutes tardy without explanation or is a no-show to a class?

In these circumstances, the student is responsible to pay the full hourly fee for the lesson in question.

What is the duration of the program?

Most courses last from 3 to 5 months. The instruction will establish at the start the full duration of the program, as well as the goal(s) that the student is expected to reach at the end of the course.

Are students expected to sign contracts with their course instructors?

Most instructors do require that their students sign a contract, with specific terms. These may include the hourly rate payable, the duration of the program, penalties if classes are missed or cancelled without appropriate notice, penalties if the student does not complete the program, expectations, responsibilities, etc.

How are students graded?

Each instructor will upload a grade and comments to the appropriate, password-protected page of this site after each session. The assigned grade and the comments may take into consideration verbal and written quizzes or test results, the completion of homework assignments, effort, attitude and appearance. The grade scale used is based out of 10, with 10 being excellent and 1 being poor. These are then converted to percentages A passing grade is 6 (or 60%) and above. Students do not have access to the pages where their grades and comments on their performance are entered. The instructor may verbally or in an email communicate a summary of these grades with the students.

What items are students prohibited from having on their person during lessons?

Students must not bring alcohol, tobacco products, lighters, any controlled substances or sharp objects to lessons. Students should leave any coats, jackets and backpacks and their outdoor shoes at the entrance of the location where the instruction is taking place. As well, students should not be chewing gum during lessons. Students are, however, encouraged to bring a bottle of water.

What is the appropriate attire for sessions?

Students are asked to keep a clean, neat appearance, with clothing appropriate to the type of lesson. For physical education, shorts, a t-shirt and indoors gym shoes or gym socks may be required. For sit-down lessons, neat, basic casual attire is the standard (a t-shirt, slacks and a clean pair of socks). Students will be expected to remove their shoes at the door. Instructors often have specific instructions–students should check with them for more details.

How should a student address his instructor?

It is vital that students and instructors maintain a professional student/teacher relationship throughout this course. As such, students should address their instructor as either Mr. or as Sir. Teachers will address their students by their first name.

What type of contact information should students provide their instructors?

Students should provide their full contact information to their instructors, including their email address, cell phone, day-time phone number, home phone (if different) and home address. Students are expected to respond to questions from their instructors and to confirm scheduled class times in a prompt manner.

What if my cumulative score is below 60% in a given course?

If at the end of the term, your score is below 60% in any course, you will be expected to take at least 5 remedial classes (5 hours) to bring your score above this level. If your score is still below the passing mark at the end of the 5 remedial classes, you will be required to re-register for a full term of classes in that subject with your instructor.

What happens when I pass my courses at the end of the term?

First off, congratulations! Your effort has paid off! You will receive a certificate to this effect, indicating the type of training or course that you passed.
